Robin Hood Way Festival Walk
On visiting St Mary’s Church Edwinstowe site where Robin Hood married Maid Marian, we then visit Robin’s hiding place at Major Oak, crossing Birklands Forest and heathland to Centre Tree, which is the middle of the old forest.
Through the plantation to Blackpool Pool, former site of the 6th Duke of Portland’s Russian Cottage. Nearby once stood Robin’s Larder (Shambles Oak,) where the outlaws hung venison after stealing it from the king. The tree was blown down in 1960’s. We visit St Edwin’s former Chapel in what was part of the Royal Deer Forest in the area now known as King John’s Palace , some 3 miles away at Old Clipstone. We return to Sherwood Visitors Centre.
This walk is 6.5 miles and will take approximately 3 hours.
