A food forest is a special type of food-producing system filled with a diverse range of mostly recurring or perennial plants. It looks very similar to a natural woodland, with multiple layers of plant life that work together to support each other’s growth.
The key difference is that a food forest is intentionally designed by people, unlike a traditional woodland created by mother nature. Carefully selected trees and plants are arranged to form a natural partnership that helps them thrive and provides an abundance of food and other useful materials. This makes a food forest much more productive for human needs compared to a typical local woodland.
While a woodland may offer some edible nuts, fruits and fungi, a well-designed food forest can provide a more sustainable, reliable and plentiful harvest.
